Release # 20-02

Subject:  Changes at Landfill Sites in Response to COVID-19

In response to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic, The Township of Algonquin Highlands has undertaken measures to protect the public, landfill attendants and our staff.

Until further notice The Township of Algonquin Highlands will no longer be accepting the following materials at ANY landfill site in the Township:

  • No construction materials, concrete, or shingles
  • No scrap metal
  • No bulky items (anything that doesn’t fit in a standard size garbage can is considered a bulky item)
  • No mattresses
  • No furniture
  • No appliances (Fridges, stoves, freezers, etc.)
  • No brush, leaves, or yard waste
  • No boats

Until further notice, only up to 1 cubic yard per vehicle of household waste, and blue box recycling (containers and fibre) will be accepted.

Re-use centres at Maple, Dorset and Oxtongue will be closed

Managing these materials requires contact between attendants and site users, and to keep everyone safe, and lower the risk of someone passing along the virus, we want to keep contact between site users and attendants at a minimum.

Attendants will still be checking landfill ID cards, and overseeing the materials you bring into the site (to ensure we don’t have anything hazardous get dumped by accident), but they will no longer be handling cash or issuing receipts.

Please hold onto these materials, they will be accepted again when the threat of transmission of the COVID-19 virus has been reduced.

Please note:  If you have a current commercial landfill charge account please contact the Township for additional information.

These measures will be challenging to manage and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.  The decision to limit the materials we accept was not taken lightly but we feel it is necessary to help ensure we can continue to provide essential services to the community.
